It was in 1905 that the Diocese of Johannesburg, responsible for the fast developing mining East Rand, decided to establish a parish to cater for Anglicans in the area. The Parish of North Rand which included, Halfway House, Rietfontein, Kempton Park, Edenvale and Bedfordview was established. Services were held once or twice a week in school halls and even in parishioner’s houses.
Fast track to 1919, when Edenvale, St Chad’s Anglican Church, laid the foundation stone in the ‘little church on the hill’ had its own building consisting of walls, a sand floor, thatch roof and some rough benches and could cater, at a push for 50 people. This was the 25th January 1919. That same foundation stone was placed again in the new church completed in the seventies, on the outside wall behind the altar and now in the parking area. This, new church and hall, built as two separate projects is now where we celebrate 100 years later.
A parish that has served all its people without fail during the week ad on Sundays and with all the great feast days Anglicans celebrate annually. The new church was built to cater for 400 people and has a hall that serves the community with a variety of activities.
